This lecture analyses the WundDACH position paper (Dissemond et al., Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, 2025) on the classification, diagnosis and treatment of infections in chronic wounds.
In short: wound infections can cause numerous complications. The goals are early diagnosis and proper treatment; many bacteria can be removed by repeatedly cleaning the wound through irrigation and debridement.
Dr. Cortés Torres's comments
He connects the topic with endodontics through history:
- Alexis Carrel, 1912 Nobel laureate in Medicine, wrote that the key to treating infected wounds is proper mechanical cleaning, because necrotic tissue shelters microorganisms and protects them from antiseptics.
- The Carrel-Dakin method irrigated wounds with a very dilute sodium hypochlorite solution, the same active agent used today to irrigate root canals.
Hence his clinical questions: during root canal treatment, what is the ideal time between visits and the ideal medication?
