Secretory IgA in human periapical lesions (1994)

A study in the Journal of Endodontics: canals open to the mouth had higher concentrations of secretory IgA.

Cortés Torres JO, Torabinejad M, Rodríguez Matiz RA, Gómez Mantilla E. Presence of secretory IgA in human periapical lesions. Journal of Endodontics, 1994; 20(2): 87-89.

In short: leaving canals open to the oral cavity may result in the formation of periapical cysts.

What was done

The concentration of secretory IgA in fluids from the canals of 33 teeth was measured using rocket immunoelectrophoresis.

What was found

Apart from the presence or absence of communication between the mouth and the canals, no other clinical finding showed a statistically significant correlation with secretory IgA. Canals open to the oral flora had significantly higher concentrations.
